Academic Intervention Services (AIS)

The AIS curriculum is during the school day which is differentiated and individualized to best meet students’ diverse needs. There may be individual, small group, or whole group remediation. Prior to receiving AIS services a permission slip form will need to be signed. The AIS teacher will consult with the student’s teacher(s) and parents to improve their performance.

All students in grades K-8 will be benchmarked and tested three times a year using the STAR Assessment tool, once in September/October; in January and at the end of the year. The information received from student performance on assessments in reading, writing and math helps us to inform our teaching and academic program to ensure we are covering all standards and meeting the needs of all students. These assessments will assist the teachers in tracking student progress throughout the year.

Gifted Math Program

We offer a gifted math program to challenge students who are performing above grade level. These students participate in math club, the Diocesan annual math competition and the math Olympiad among other programs.  A select number of top performing 6th grade math students will receive special instruction time and be chosen to test for the gifted math program at University of Buffalo.

Special Education

We strive to ensure that all students’ needs are being met and serviced the best they can. Students in grades K-8 can be evaluated and assessed to determine if they are eligible for services through Orchard Park Schools. If the student is eligible, they must file a Dual Enrollment letter with Orchard Park Special Education Office on or before June 1 preceding the school year for which such services are requested.

As a result of the testing, Orchard Park School professionals come directly to SJV during the school day to provide services for any child who qualifies for an IEP. These services provided by Orchard Park can include, PT, speech, OT, resource room, etc.

Students in the 3 and 4 year old program that are in need of evaluations or services must contact their home school district office of Pre-school Special Education.

Within our school, Mrs. Kearns, our school counselor, will work with teachers and families to develop and review 504 plans to give students accommodations in the classroom.
